| Super rhymes from a super and eclectic collection of emcees with Dubbledge as their ever-present hub. |

UK emcee Dubbledge is soon to be releasing The Richest Man In Babylon, his DEBUT album. And if the mix-'tape' Fist of Jah is anything to go by, it'll be something special. Dubbledge and his comrades on this collection (for there are many) BLAH some conscious and pretty blistering rhymes with a strong UK hip hop identity and charisma that jumps out from the CD.
Quality production is mostly from Steve Ebola and Foreign Beggars' Dag Nabbit. Some impressive extra work is done by GhosTTown, Jabba Tha Kut and others elsewhere. There are some head-nodding stormers like the incredibly gritty 'Ssshhhh' and the El-P-style booming bizzaro mixture (with bells and flute) of 'Unauthorised Loss'.
But as with most hip hop, the emcees prove to be the most critical to the success or failure of the project. Thankfully they've got the vital combination of raw excitement and practiced skill. Dubbledge is the main (and incredibly quotable) star here, but that's not to say that emcees like Verbal (ripping it up 'Nah Man'), Orifice Vulgatron and Mention don't shine on the mic.
There's a variety of topics covered here, from the tragic trouble of 'Unauthorised Loss' to the anti-violence call out to gun-glorifying fake emcees in 'So Hip-Hop' to the tongue-in-cheek beatbox-backed (Shlomo) 'Perfect' to the pure battle rhyming of 'Off-Key'. The latter track is two and a half minutes of burning verse in a compact straight no-nonsense manner, pure braggadocio with Dubbledge "train[ing] emcees like kids on potties". Quotables litter the album in general, partly pulled off by Dubbledge's infectious charisma, partly by the continual pop-culture and political references, and partly - well, mostly - through the lyrical dexterity and innovation on display. In 'Don't Interrupt' Dub claims that he'll "make a white dude scream 'Black Power' and turn a black man BNP in an hour", and in 'Unauthorised Loss' warns "[b]ut you can't stop my shine, steer clear of me like a double yellow line". Stuff like that isn't just luck when these are but a few samples of lyrics that are continually quotable.
The packaging makes it look throwaway, and the mixtape format makes it easy to pass off, but there is gold buried in here. A really strong showing from Dubbledge and all the artists on the album. Full album eagerly awaited. |
