November Moment

@ The Old Angel, Stony Street, Nottingham - 23/04/04
Set List and Pics...

Nottingham band November Moment make an excellent return to live performance tonight, treating the crowd to a powerful set of atmospheric songs as they continue to carve out a niche for themselves as band with a unique sound.

Tropical humidity in The Angel's upstairs room notwithstanding, November Moment strolled into an energised set with their newly revamped soundscape intro before plunging into first song proper "I will inflict wounds upon your heart". Surprisingly perhaps benefiting from being a little slower than usual, the song has an excellent dynamic of lurching riffs (hats off to the drummer and bassist), galloping verses and a genuinely odd tune. It's odd in a good way though, a way that makes you think "now why can't I write a tune like that?"

Everything is all a bit loose however, the spacey, flangey guitar sounds perhaps muddying the sound somewhat despite being a major factor in the band's individual style. "Caught between storms" flashes by in a blur of riffing, lyrical quality and inventive rhythms before the beginning of "Washed out" and the seemingly traditional (November) "guitars-going-out-of-tune" Moment.
This is a flaw that needs to be sorted out, as the band often rely on quiet twin guitar interludes and that kind of thing can sound awful with someone twanging away in a different tuning to the rest of the band. In fact the quieter side is often what sets them apart and really gives them an added dimension. The problem is soon rectified though, and the band move into the moody strains of what I think is the best song in their catalogue. Marrying a haunting melody to a perfected quiet/loud dynamic the band make excellent use of their twin frontman capabilities - when the harmony arrives in the chorus it's one of those moments that make you realise you're watching a band that have really got something special.
