Gig Reviews
Redjetson
@ On The Rocks, Shoreditch, London - 08/12/04
(Continued...)

What with words like "fragile", "layers", "epic" and "shit" being thrown around with gay abandon, you may reasonably wonder how this plays out amongst the smoke, piss, claustrophobia and sexual frustration which constitutes the average indie venue. Against all odds, it sounds really good: despite their complex sound (the band comprises anything up to 27 guitarists), there's also a directness to the band which makes them come across really well live, and it works particularly well tonight for some (probably bafflingly sound-engineer-y) reason. Highlight of the set for us is kind-of-single "This City Moans" (it was released as a split 12" with Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies earlier in the year), the title of which seems to sum up the band quite neatly for some reason, and which gradually builds up to a post-rock crescendo which sounds absolutely massive. Which reminds us of one other point to note: they're quite terrifyingly loud. Tinyvoices recommends its readers go and see Redjetson at one of their upcoming live dates, but perhaps take along earplugs to avoid post-gig tinnitus. There you go: practical, useful advice, and no lengthy metaphors involving tsunamis of jam or raining hammers. That's how reviews should be done, people!
