Gig Reviews
Settlefish / November Moment / The Legion of Doom
/ Paris in the Spring
@ The Old Angel, Nottingham - 06/05/04
Lacklustre support from another sparse audience killed the atmosphere a little bit tonight, and Nottingham really should be ashamed of itself - bands of this quality deserve more. Oi, you at the back there watching TV at home, are you listening??

First up, local band Paris In The Spring played their second ever gig with this line up tonight, and did enough to show that they could be ones to watch for the future. They have the components for some great songs - great riffs, some pretty unique ideas, good hardcore vocals - but they just aren't quite putting them together properly yet. Riffs tend to lurch unsteadily into other riffs and nothing really has a chance to develop. I hear they've recruited another singer to handle the previously slightly dodgy melodic parts though, and this should be the final piece of the jigsaw they need to really start going somewhere, with some work. Keep an eye out.

Second up The Legion Of Doom gave us some instrumental metal of epic proportions (at very short notice after two bands pulled out). Taking their cue from all aspects of the metal spectrum, these boys really put on a show and have plenty of stage presence to make up for their lack of an obvious frontman. They don't really seem to need a singer either, replacing that aspect with some quality harmonised lead guitar parts. Some of the tunes begin to lose momentum after a while, but new material and a less apathetic crowd should help with that. Many rock points awarded too for one of the guitarists pulling off the fabled guitar-swung-round-back-without-killing-guitar/audience/guitarist move.

November Moment must think Tinyvoices is stalking them. Not my fault however, as they too were drafted in at 2pm this afternoon. Not their best performance tonight it must be said, with some niggling technical problems that pissed off some of the Moments no end.
