Champion
Kickboxer are completely indescribable. I'm going to have
a shot at it here, but be assured that no earthly form of
communication could come close to representing what happens
when these four chaps from Sheffield put their considerable
heads together.
This limited edition, double A-sided white-vinyl 7" release
by the Sheffield Phonographic Corporation is the first in
what is likely to be a long line of inspired, idiosyncratic
brilliance. Ostensibly a four-piece rock band, the use of
their instruments stretches far beyond the conventional. "Like
Him and Her and Her and Me" employs, amongst other things,
incredible four-part harmonies, a glockenspiel, a screwdriver-frying
pan combo and a lyrical theme of our ultimate cosmic insignificance.
It really, honestly, sounds like nothing else out there. There
are no reference points available.
"Supertram" edges towards wiry angry guitar rock,
but still from a different universe. Mad cackles, tortured
keyboards, savaged guitars and frenziedly lackadaisical (and
gloriously English) vocals leave you bewildered and buzzing.
There
cannot be a more inventive, eccentric, or inspired band around.
The very best thing about this is that we're right at the
beginning.
