Besides the baffling title, the
most immediately striking thing about "Lion Rip" is
the similarity of its opening bars to those of "Anarchy
in the UK". It’s really quite
uncanny. From there, however, the song settles
down into a tuneful if predictable garage
racket, which sounds like any number of today’s
hip young beat combos.
Far more promising is b-side "Now Be Still",
a stripped-down bluesy growler of a song, reminiscent of
a more melodic version of our current favourites the Kills,
or perhaps a less smug version of the White Stripes.
Nothing to set alight an otherwise grey and dull Saturday
afternoon spent waiting for a sofa to arrive, then; but none
the less, the Duke Spirit have excited our infallible Spiderman-style
indie sixth sense, and we eagerly look forward to hearing
some kind of long-playing disc.
