Dear Fleeing New York,
I am sorry I have taken so long to respond. Things
have been a bit busy lately, what with moving house,
starting a new job, not having an internet connection
for the last month (very inconvenient), and, the other
day, getting head-butted hard by a random arsehole.
With all the commotion, commuting and concussion, I
forgot to tell anyone how excellent your three-track “Hollywood
Bowl” single is.
It really is very excellent. The title track is sassy,
sarcastic and sultry, like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs writing
a song for the Lost Boys soundtrack. The simplicity
is disengagingly effective, from the opening yelps
to the foot-stomping, hand-clapping finish. As well
as being very good, it is clearly a lot cleverer than
I am.
"Scandinavia”, meanwhile, is a cheeky little
number. Nice riff - like the Wannadies doing Kyuss.
Plus, Emma Richardson’s PJ Harvey-ish vocals
sound properly good. This really should be a single
in its own right. "Surefire” shows off
another brilliant bit of riffing, in what is another
brilliantly written, brilliantly arranged and (the
concussion robbed me of my adjectives) brilliantly
performed song. This, also, could be a single itself.
I hear the album’s out now. I bet it’s
also excellent, isn’t it?
All the best,
Tom.
