To certain elements of TinyVoices
(that would be Mat), the Go! Team’s movie-soundtrackish
debut is considered nothing less than a work
of genius. Those of us less enamoured with
their cutesy kindergarten instrumental funk
electronica (that would be me) are left scratching
our heads in slightly-bored bewilderment.
"Ladyflash” comes across like a hippy Lemon Jelly in a lounge
bar. A mildly distorted funk beat underpins faint digitised vocals, floating
around
with what sounds like a primary school playground, a flute, and all manner of
pretty samples.
It is actually very nice - no matter how much you try to turn your nose up at
its stylishly twee abandon, it just sits back, folds its arms and smiles sweetly,
safe in the knowledge that whether you like it or not, you’ll be back for
more - probably in the early daylight hours of a Sunday morning, sitting against
the radiator on the floor of someone else’s living room.
Meanwhile, the Hot Chip Remix focuses its energy on a soulful electric piano
line before treating us to the vocals at an audible level. And though it retains
most of the charm of the original, it loses a little of the blended magic by
giving unspectacular elements of the mix a little too much exposure.
