"Manchester, so much to
answer for,” sang
Morrissey. In no particular order, the list includes:
the concept of the modern city; English socialism; them
hats; any number of crap ITV1 comedy dramas; some good
music; and some very rubbish music.
And now! Get ready
to add to this list The Longcut, who apparently are “the
perfect cure to the bearded acoustic ramblings of a tired
Manchester music scene” (this from the same PR
agency who were trying to sell us Num about five minutes
ago, so frankly I don’t know what to believe any
more). Their claim to be the rightful heirs to Manchester’s
musical legacy is somewhat undercut by the fact that
none of them are actually from the 0161 dialling code
area, but rather met while studying at one of the city’s
600 universities, thus branding them FOOKIN STUDENTS
for the rest of their lives in the local vernacular.
That said, "Transition" is quite MCR: imagine
shouty vocals and “dance” music made only
using “rock” instruments, as if to comply
with some kind of wartime economy drive. Apparently this
release also comprises "Late Night Bus" and "A
Last Act of a Desperate Man", but we can’t
tell you much about those because they aren’t included
on our promo copy. Poor.
