With still a month left
to go, Martha Wainwright has all but walked off with
the highly coveted TinyVoices
Most Brilliantly Sweary Song Title Of The Year
Award 2004 (notwithstanding Rachel Stevens making
a doomed bid for Christmas number one position
with a cover of Peter Cook’s "I Love
You So Much I Can’t Shit". Which
would be the best thing ever, come to think of
it. Richard X could produce. Have we got a number
for Rachel Stevens’ “people”?).
Wainwright is the daughter of Loudon III and
the brother of Rufus (and Timmy, the black sheep
of the family, who isn’t at all musical
and enjoys puzzles), and this here’s her
debut release. Conveniently for all concerned
(not least me), she fits nicely into the “expressive
(and possibly "kooky") female singer-songwriter-guitarist” niche,
and is attracting predictable comparisons to
the likes of Joni Mitchell and Bjork.
"Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole" itself
is excellent, a straightforward strummy acoustic
job which
is lifted
up by Wainwright’s striking voice and beguiling
lyrics which we like to think are probably about being
dumped. "I Will Internalize" continues this
theme nicely, while "It’s Over" is
discordant screamy nonsense, and cover version "How
Soon" a cute Casio keyboard-backed ballad. There’s
something very slightly anachronistic (in a good way)
about the whole package, vaguely recalling early ‘90s
west-coast America: you can even imagine the whole thing
being inspired by an illicit affair with Evan Dando.
All in all, should get people sufficiently excited in
advance of Wainwright’s debut album in February.
Boo-ya!
