My goodness, this is non-descript.
I’m finding
it really hard to find anything constructive to say.
Imagine Starsailor songs performed in a very dour way,
all at the same speed. Medium paced acoustic rock with
medium strength tunes that don’t really go anywhere,
using guitars (either acoustic or slightly distorted),
drums, bass and a few other noises. Yes, a tambourine.
And some maracas.
In their defence though, OX’s debut mini-album
isn’t by any means bad. Sometimes unimaginative,
plodding and dull, yes, but sometimes it’s also
quite good. For every tediously somber verse knocked
out like Turin Brakes but without any of the flair or
style there is a sweet little breakdown or reprise of
a decently catchy chorus, such as that of opener ‘Meet
Me Halfway’, and the laid back folk-rapping of ‘Broken
Silver’ is actually pretty enjoyable. ‘Don’t
Go’ even breaks out a little bit of energy and
a chorus with a bit more oomph to raise this release
out of its torpor.
However, there just isn’t really enough going on
here for me to say more. Dull, but inoffensive.
