As far as irritating people go, you would be hard pushed to find somebody more
so than Johnny Borrell. At the very beginning his rants and self-proclamations
were reasonably interesting, and certain publications lapped it -
giving this ‘other new band’ exactly the kind of press required
to make a debut album go platinum. Only now, 12 months down the line,
it has all grown a tad tiresome. Isn’t it about time Razorlight
produced some of this mind-blowing stuff they supposedly have up
their sleeves?
Fresh off the back of Up All Night is the release that is supposed
to show the world just how much Razorlight (aka Johnny Borrell, two Swedes and
a drummer) have grown and developed since their prolonged assault on our radios
throughout 2004. And love them or hate them (I’m presuming the latter in
most cases), this song achieves pretty much exactly what it sets out to do.
No it isn’t pioneering, and the video is fairly laughable. But with an
added emphasis on instrumental diversity (by which they mean including a piano,
which is about as diverse as Razorlight get) and even background recordings of
their own delirious fans, the song builds in stature throughout, culminating
in something about as epic as the band could manage. "Somewhere Else” is
a mainstream reminder that the band are still here, and for that, if nothing
else, it achieves precisely what it intends to.
