Right, I hate listening to this
and my stereo seems to hate playing it, so I’m going to
take a leaf out of Tom’s book. The
rules are simple; if the song begins to play
again (my CD player has been trying to start
the track for a good 7 or 8 minutes now),
then I have the length of one final listen
to jot down my thoughts.
Okay, this isn’t working, I’m getting my portable
CD player out. Right….ok, sub-Hives drums, here come
the guitars. Hang on, is this a Strokes CD? Oh, no, the guy
isn’t singing, he’s just talking. Oh my god,
is that a pretend cockney accent? Not much of a chorus, but
now we’re at the middle 8, which is a bit better. Yeah,
I quite like this bit, nice driving drums, good tempo, AWFUL
vocals, but the guitars sound quite good. Oh, it’s
the end, not the middle 8. Hmm.
Okay, now let’s be a bit more constructive – I
must admit to absolutely hating anything of the Strokes/Hives
ilk, so if that’s your bag then you might need to take
this review with a pinch of salt. Apart from the unimaginative,
well, everything, “Lackey” doesn’t seem
to me to be any worse than those two bands, although a little
more tightness in the performance wouldn’t go amiss.
The beat’s pretty danceable, so fair play to that.
The Strokes might have a case for a charge of plagiarism,
though.
