Unlike Tinyvoices editor Tom
I knew nothing at all about thisgirl until I got this
cd. In fact,
I thought they were somebody else entirely.
Now I know they’re not, but I also
no longer know who the other band were. Ah
well, you win some you lose some.
Anyway, it’s not at all bad, this. Main track
and first single from album Uno, "master blaster" has
a groovy lilt to it that adds a slightly different
flavour to its crashing riffs, and the vocals also
have a distinctly smooth, pleasing octave scaling quality
thanks to Liam Creamer’s soulful delivery. The
chorus also rocks, plain and simple. But it isn’t
that simple, because…there’s something
about thisgirl that I can’t quite pin down, and
I like that.
Next up is a sterling cover of Massive Attack’s "Angel",
which manages to make the track seem like it was a
rock song all along. Again, it’s a trick of brooding
smoothness coupled with a rocking chorus – although
it would seem from Tom’s
album review that thisgirl do have more up their sleeve than this.
"plastercaster" is to all intents and purposes "master
blaster" performed acoustically, and is a nice
curio but doesn’t really contribute much musically.
"don’t
be a kite (live)" is the most spectacularly un-live
sounding song I have ever heard, which leads me to
suspect that it’s actually just part of the title.
Either way, I get the feeling that this is probably
the most accurate representation of thisgirl on the
cd. Again, it’s quiet verse/loud chorus stuff…but
it’s just hit me that there’s something
in the verse which really adds a sort of special…character.
There’s some real soul here. I can tell this
is going to be a grower.
