Yeah yeah yeah gimmicky girl singer rock blah blah wet indie bollocks waffle waffle boring and predictable I'm talking out of my arse.

I've heard that said by several people now about Drive Like You Stole It, although sadly they've never added the bit about talking out of their arse. It's a fine example of lazy and lowest common denominator reviewing. What they failed to notice was that DLYSI have the following qualities: subtlety, meaning the dynamics of intense and delicate are still there, they're just not shoved right in your face in today's oh-so-typical style of "right, this is a loud bit so this is where I scream, and here's a quie bit - shit, where's my "Croon like an Emo-boy" guidebook?"; a singer who actually Sings, with all the range and expression that the capital letter entails; excellent songwriting, as the tuneful delicacy and crescendous (that should be a word) culmination of 2nd track "Treading Water" demonstrate nicely; and finally, a wonderful, warm, back-to-basics sound without loads of silly effects to cover the weak points or try to update pretensions of being retro (i.e. that you've ripped off lots of bands that you're hoping your victims are too young and herd-like to have heard about).

There isn't room for them anyway, because there aren't really very many weak points. Perhaps "The Sound of Second Place" meanders a little too much, but on the whole this mini-album is top notch throughout, combining atmospheric and moody with cathartic and explosive, and just being generally a breath of fresh air in a mostly stale alt-rock market.
