| Well, slap me round the face with a freshly laundered badger if this wasn’t an ace gig. Not often do all three bands entertain me at a show, because I’m a miserable old git, but tonight they managed it with aplomb. |

First up Nottingham’s own El Cielo are a more enticing prospect live than they are on record at the moment, which is a shame. That’s not to say their demo wasn’t good (see review), rather that their slightly generic laid back/not-quite-nu-metal sound is to some extent overcome by their personality in the live setting. An engaging band to watch as well as being more than competent musicians, El Cielo offer up a slew of rhythmic ideas served on a bed of more-than-palatable melody. There’s an impressive progressive element that is also far more prominent in the live setting, which totally avoids any ‘look how clever we are’ showmanship. Good stuff. I look forward to where they go from here. Note to singer though – I could see your pants all the way through the gig, which was a bit distracting.
Frankly, I wasn’t expecting much from Sylosis because of their name. However, they soon had me bang to rights with their searingly heavy twin-guitar hardcore. Backed by a frankly awesome drummer, the band churned out a series of tight-as-fuck aural punches with a hefty sprinkling of stupidly nimble-fingered guitar parts, heavily recalling Reflux in their brutal yet intoxicatingly majestic complexity. By the time they finished everyone wanted more, but alas, I shall have to wait till next time. Now why the fuck didn’t I buy a cd?
Twin Zero. Twin, fucking, Zero. I thought they were going to be hard pressed to follow what went before, but without meaning a word of disrespect to the other bands TZ were band of the night by a mile. This band is really, really special, especially on this kind of form. Airing almost all of debut album Monolith and a spectacular new song (I assume from the 27/Twin Zero split release), tonight’s gig was an extraordinarily powerful performance of punishingly heavy riffs, pummelling drums, soaring melodies and genius dynamics. It’s all about the dynamics…really, it was more like watching a 40 minute symphony than a series of songs performed by a ‘rock band’. Words fail me, to be honest…but if Twin Zero don’t make one of the most beautiful, cathartic, soul-savingly wonderful noises on the planet then you can hit me with that badger again as many times as you want. |
