| Absentee’s popularity in indie circles is something of a mystery to me. I’ll readily admit my dislike for Daniel Michaelson’s vocals is probably the main reason for my apathy towards them, but I’ve never found myself remotely excited by anything they’ve done. |

This single, sadly, has done little to change my mind. ‘Body In A Car Somewhere’ is a jaunty number, alive with horns and a bobbing bassline. It’s reasonably pleasant until Michaelson’s vocals come in like a recently-awoken Nick Cave. If there were any real innovation on show here, it might be something I could see past, but it’s pretty formulaic, one way or another. Like a band playing well within itself.
Personally, I don’t see what Absentee are doing that’s so much more worthy than the hundreds and hundreds of other bands in the country making similar stuff. It seems highly generic to me. Sometimes they hit on something quite nice, but for the most part, it’s quite easy to tune out and forget they’re even on.
B-side ‘Rosie’ is a gentle, slow number with some nice female backing vocals and a pleasant atmosphere, but again the vocals and the lack of anything remotely remarkable let it down. I doubt I’ll ever grow to love Absentee as so many others do, and if I am to, it will have to be with something a bit more interesting than this. |
