| I’m relatively new to Tim Ten Yen. But while tonight was only my second time seeing him live, I have strong suspicions he is the most entertaining performer in the country just at the minute. That’s a fairly lofty statement, but it’s one that won’t surprise too many people who have been fortunate enough to see his live show first hand. |

As Tim walks onto the tiny Betsey Trotwood stage and sits down with his keyboard and The Sinister Cat (a toy cat that is present at every live show), you can hear giggles from the back of the room, clearly coming from the mouths of those expecting to see something embarrassing. Instead, what they are treated to is a ridiculously good run of incredible pop songs, all sung with unbridled enthusiasm.
Pretty much every song is deserving of ten out of ten for craft and performance, but special mentions must go the playful genius of ‘The Fox And The Bear’, recent single ‘When The Song Applies To You’ and overall highlight ‘Sea Anemone’, which has pretty much the entire room dancing around like nobody’s watching.
Between songs, Tim is shy and mumbly, but witty with it. Every song, whether with a sad sentiment or not, is performed with a childlike joy, and it’s difficult not to grin and dance throughout the entire show. Truly, the best songwriter of the last few years has come from an unlikely source. His next show is at Sun & Doves in Camberwell on Sunday (19/11). I, for one, will be down at the front again, dancing. You can come and laugh at me if you like, but don’t be surprised to find yourself doing exactly the same by the end of the show. |
