"This is from our hearts", screams Wade MacNeil seconds into the first track, and this being Alexisonfire, you wouldn't expect anything different.

With two successful albums under their belts (platinum selling in the US) Alexisonfire have nothing to prove, and while the band struck upon a winning formula with the punk-inspired riffs and sing/scream vocal attack of previous album Watch Out!, resting on their laurels was never an option. Crisis is as fresh as anything hitting the shelves right now.

Alexisonfire now have a three-pronged vocal attack. George Pettit and Wade MacNeil provide the screaming, but it's Dallas Green's refreshingly melodic crooning that drives the band forward. Second track 'This Could Be Anywhere in the World' sees Green, fresh from his City and Colour side project, playing off Pettit's screaming perfectly, while the guitars stutter along and the drums make a perfect backdrop. No wonder they picked this as the first single. Album interlude 'You Burn First' is another cracking track. Featuring Gared O' Donnell (Planes Mistaken for Stars) as guest vocalist, it sits somewhere in between Guns n’ Roses and Neurosis - while the music is slow-paced and drony, the vocals come along like a somewhat (more) depressed Axl Rose, switching mid song into a metal drone. But there is also a lot of filler: 'Crisis', 'Mailbox Arson' and opener 'Drunks, Lovers, Sinners, Saints' all have little to offer.

Every hardcore album these days seems to need a slow song – because everyone loves slow songs, right? Here we get closer 'Rough Hands', a desolate ballad with Green's vocals lending a ton of emotion. Alexisonfire will always suffer the emo tag, especially with their lyrics, but haven’t lyrics always been about love anyway?

Alexisonfire are miles ahead of most other current screamo bands, and while this may be their best album to date, there is still much room for improvement. But until then, Crisis is a very good stop-gap.

Call me a miserable old git, but I've heard this ALL before. As soon as the vocals came in I knew. This is like Dredg with some hardcore by numbers chucked in, if you ask me. Is anyone doing anything new?? *sob*

Circulus? Ephel Duath?

Besides when bands do something new, it's not always good. See:

Well, I'd level the same argument at Circulus and Ephel Duath. Technical ability yes, musical ability no. Bah. Maybe I'm just too old.

I've not heard much Circulus. But Ephel Duath really are a fantastic band, even better live. I demand you re-listen. Right now!

I'm afraid still don't rate them. Bah, humbug. Anyone else got anything to offer?
