| This debut mini-album from Welsh quintet As Silence Falls showcases some rather competent guitar work, competent vocals and competent song writing. In fact, that’s all it showcases: competence. |

Sharing hometowns with Hondo Maclean and Funeral for a Friend, As Silence Falls have shared many stages with the aforementioned bands in the past. And in those two bands we have a ready-made comparison. As Silence Falls sound like Hondo Maclean. Or, if you prefer, they sound like Funeral for a Friend with more screaming. Either way there isn’t really too much to get excited about. Yes these guys can play and yeah the vocalist has a pretty decent set of lungs, but at present they write nothing more than unremarkable metal songs.
‘There’s No Axe in Accident’ starts with 20 seconds of From Autumn To Ashes-a-like riffing and screaming before breaking down in an Alexisonfire inspired verse. It is worth noting at this point that vocalist Sion Woodbine has a quite remarkable American accent. For a Welshman. ‘Where Tragedy Lies’ is a much better track - less Hondo Maclean and a bit more Killswitch Engage, I still can’t quite shake the feeling that I’ve heard this all before though.
And indeed as the last note of ‘A Shadow of Greed’ fades, it turns out that I have heard all this before — numerous times in fact — but that’s not to say it isn’t good, because it isn’t half bad. It would be wrong for me to slate them. The musicianship is good and the vocalist has a fine, if indistinctive, voice. If you listen to As Silence Falls and expect to hear something new and different and fresh then you’ll leave disappointed. If you’re just looking for the next From Autumn to Ashes/Hondo Maclean/Killswitch Engage, well then here’s your band.
As Silence Falls, I hope we meet again soon and I hope your next record blows everything else out of the water. But until that time you can have a 6. |
