No.6 in the Best Of 2005 Top 20

This, the third album from prog-emo superstars Coheed and Cambria, was even better than we expected, taking the best parts of their last two brilliant albums and forging the finest record to emerge from that already-stale scene. Claudio Sanchez’s Geddy Lee-inspired vocals add stunning melody to the awe-inspiring music. C&C are sounding more and more like Pink Floyd each day, and while this album is already their best, you can’t help feeling their greatest work is still to come.

Like, oh my God. This album is variously rubbish, gay, cheesy and annoying. It's one thing to make noises that sound like Pink Floyd, and quite another to make them sound good. As only Pink Floyd and the late great Kudzu have done. Last time I downlo..I mean buy anything the Buncemeister recommends.

I am having less and less faith in anyone's musical taste but my own these days. Which is, of course, impeccably amazing.

Haha. You mean you've listened to my recommendations before?

This is a good album man, and i'm sure its not only me who voted for this, hence the fact it got to Number 5 in the list.

Or am I wrong?

No, you definitely weren't the only one to endorse it. The only question is, will anyone else own up to it after Will's outburst?

I've got to admit, I find them a bit on the silly side.
Who'd have thought post-hardcore would be used as an excuse to bring metal full circle back to Maiden-style cheesy trousers and leather lyrics?

i like it. although i hadn't heard it when we did the poll and hence didn't vote for it i don't think. it's not nearly as good as i was hoping for though, having read various reviews. bit too throwaway.

Thanks to Dan's endorsement, and his famed liking of silly metal, I now feel entirely vindicated.

Boo to silly metal. A guitar solo maketh not a song.

I think we should ignore Will from now on. He ain't no Romantic, that's the trouble.

Knobber.

There's more to CoCa than guitar solo's, you just got to find it man.

My comment about guitar solos refers more to silly metal in general. Silly metal like DragonForce.

I really am struggling to see the appeal of this band though. The vocalist is admittedly unique, but his bizarre over-pronunciation of sounds just fucks me off. Their use of so-called emo soft bits just makes them sound pretentious and cheesy, and the Floyd-esque atmospherics are poorly executed and generally inappropriate. The production is horribly nu-metal (double tracked vocal parts - UGH!), and the song-writing harks back to an age where the tightness of a man's trousers was more important than any sort of musical ability.

Next thing you'll be telling me you like Avenged Sevenfold...

a guitar solo doesn't make a song, but it doesn't ruin one either. sometimes you just have guitar solos.

Re: dragonforce - i'm not rising to that. some bands set out to rock as much as possible, some bands set out to make obscure and difficult 'intellectual' music, some bands want to move people emotionally as much as possible, and some bands just want to play stupidly fast metal with silly escapist lyrics and awesomely technical solos. you criticise them as if they're trying to be really emotionally intense or something. get with it.

oh, i did rise to it.

Dragonforce are fun. They're a band you listen to when you want to smile, they're the musical equivalent of a Ross Noble gig.

Avenged Sevenfold are total arse though. How much do they want to sound like GnR?

Well, it seems I've been well and truly put in my place. Of course, all the music I listen to is intensely emotional and devoid of any technical musical ability. Oh, and I forgot how hilarious Ross Noble is. Really, really hilarious. Almost as hilarious as over the top sarcasm.

I think you've found your soulmate Dan. Shall I book the room for you?

Name: Dan | Date: 26/02/06 | Reply
no, but you should book a place on the next 'how to not miss the point' course at your local adult education centre. i never said anything about the music you liked, that has nowt tae dae wi'it.

I don't mean to sound patronising Will, apologies if I do, but what music do you listen to?

Are you not a Ross Noble fan? Fair enough... I suppose.

Don't worry about it James. This kind of thing always happens with me and Dan - I've known him for 5 years, and we've pretty much argued for most of that time. It wouldn't be right if there wasn't some sort of healthy banter going on - you just happened to get caught in the middle of it. And yes, it appears I did entirely miss the point. I think I read what I wanted to read. Dammit - 1-0 to the midget northener.

Re: what music I listen to, wouldn't it be a good idea for all the staff writers to have a "My Favourite Bands/Albums", and a "What's I'm Listening To At The Moment" section?

Briefly, my favourite artists ever are (in no order) Presidents Of The USA, Kyuss, NOFX, G. Love & Special Sauce, DJ Shadow, Helmet, Fu Manchu, Pennywise, Biffy, Rage, and probably more that I can't think of now.

At the mo I am digging Amon Tobin, Shots Fired, Clutch, Brant Bjork, Bonobo and Orquesta Del Desierto.

Never really thought Ross Noble was that funny. But then there are far less funny things in the world.

Yeah I agree actually. That would be quite cool.

That is a cool list of bands though, love Kyuss, Helmet and Biffy. Never heard Fu Manchu though, but always thought I should have...

Plan is at some point to sort out the profiles properly and put everyone's top 10 for 2005 in there. It'll happen, one day.

I think Ross Noble's funny, though the most frustrating act ever - he only actually finishes about 30 per cent of his random rambles.

Name: Will | Date: 27/02/06 | Reply
Well, no-one could describe Fu Manchu as original or innovative or anything, but what they do they do well. Which is monster rock'n'roll riffs, lyrics about cars, girls, skating and good old Mary Jane. They rock like a beyatch. I recommend 'In Search Of...', 'No One Rides For Free' and 'California Crossing', but get any of their albums and you get a pretty good taste of what they're about.

I'm sure they're all like £6 in HMV anyway, always worth it for that price.
