Up until recently Enter Shikari were the most hyped unsigned band in Britain (you could even say people 'raved' about them). But despite attracting attention from several major indie labels, Enter Shikari have chosen to release their music on their own label, Ambush Reality, and this track, 'Mothership', is their first release.

After near-constant touring for the past three years, Enter Shikari built up an incredible and extremely loyal fan base. These kids go to their every show, sing and scream every word, mosh to every beat and breakdown and know every little detail to every single song. With these sorts of fans you really would expect a pretty special band. Unfortunately, Enter Shikari are far from special.

Personally, I'm all for experimentation within the metal genre, but there will always be musical styles which will never, ever, mix well. Enter Shikari have stumbled upon an idea - "Why the hell hasn't anyone tried putting trance, techno and hardcore together before?" - and there can only be one answer to that question: because it sounds awful. For starters, it doesn't sound like trance or techno, it sounds like straight-up rave, and secondly, to pull it off the hardcore also has to be pretty special, and it isn't.

'Mothership' starts with an average rave intro, soon followed by pounding drums and hardcore riffs. This leads into an ordinary hardcore track with run of the mill vocals, while the rave-style keyboards bleep annoyingly in the background. And, apart from the dull, uninspiring breakdowns, this is the formula for the rest of the track.

Enter Shikari seem to be nothing more than a novelty band, and once the kids grow tired of it they may be left wishing they really did sign with that major label.

I just found this on my computer and listened to it. It is rubbish. That's the most inappropriate use of a rave synth sound I've ever heard.

Enter Shikari fuckin rule. Of corse everyone will have their own opinion. But to say 'it's rubbish' is increadibly ignorant. You dont like it... hundreds of of other people would disagree with you!

The person who wrote this, is a complete and utter twat.
I think that 999.9/1000 people would disagree with you. Fuck it, i know it.
And im not usually into this sort of music, they are quality.
No wonder this site is called tiny voices.

Well, thats TWO people on the site that don't like it. And I can find you hundreds more. Instead of calling me a twat, can you, instead, explain to me, in 5 reasons or more exactly why Enter Shikari are so great. I bet you can't...

Name: Matty | Date: 02/10/06 | Reply
off the top of my head heres eight

1.There great fun
2.they dont take themselves too seriously
3.they to pull off this sub-qenre and it sounds awesome!
4.there trying something different
5.there live shows are always insane
6.theyve got this far and there only kids
7.they get rock kids into trance and trance kids into rock
8.there songs are catchy as fuck!

everyones entitled to there own opinion but this one is really close minded. there music is far from dull! and whilst its nothing collosal its something that is very easily enjoyable.

i personally love this band and i dont think your being fair to them at all!

x

Name: James | Date: 02/10/06 | Reply
I totally disagree. I think I am being fair, I listen to hardcore all the time, and what they're doing is nothing special. At all. Without the Rave/Trance element they'd be nothing more than an average hardcore band. And i'm not a fan of the rave aspect of their music. I don't think you can say fairer than that...

Name: Tom | Date: 03/10/06 | Reply
I also think it's substandard hardcore. It would be simply boring were it not for the trance thing making it actually slightly horrible. That said, they're fanbase seems to make up half the entire readership of this site, so perhaps we'd better start loving them sharpish...

Name: Illiterate Tom | Date: 03/10/06 | Reply
That should be "there fanbase", obviously.

Name: Dan | Date: 04/10/06 | Reply
Nice one Tom. I'd just like to point out that the 'Dan' above wasn't me - me being the one who used to write for this site.

Or even "their fanbase".

Name: Dan | Date: 05/10/06 | Reply
I've a feeling Tom was doing that deliberately...or have I overestimated him? ;>

Name: Will | Date: 05/10/06 | Reply
You have indeed overestimated him. Tom is, in fact, a severely retarded dwarf with no legs. He just dresses well enough to hide it.

Name: Lambdoner | Date: 06/10/06 | Reply
I'd say it's pretty accurate, although mothership is quite a weak song for them (If you hear "anything can happen in the next half hour" it's a much better side of ES), it seems a gimmick - as though every move or note is done to be cool and scene - The idea of putting rave with rock is a great one - check out a band called Spectrum 7 to hear how it can go well - but the rave parts are mostly crap and tagged on. The kids love it though don't they, maybe i'm just old (or have taste)

Ryan.

'Techno is shit' isn't where I was coming from at all. To dismiss a whole genre as being shit, without hearing barely 1% of it, would be foolish. What I'm saying is, writing a hardcore song and tagging a shit synth-rave intro onto the beginning, does not make this band interesting, different, pioneering, or indeed, good.

Thanks.

I agree with the review- the song sucks, music designed for stupid kids- a symptom of the dire state of music today- the lyrics mean nothing, the sound is a combination of generic synths meets generic screaming. Hopefully people will grow bored of this one trick pony soon.

A noveltly band eh? Go back to listening to the rest of those unoriginal 'metal' bands who get gigs from no effort. Enter Shikari have created an awesome mix of using techno, hardcore, and electronica, and if you don't like it then you're just not ready for some orginality.

Name: James | Date: 08/04/07 | Reply
I'm afraid you have me mistaken. I don't really listen to 'unoriginal' metal bands, thats the problem with them they're unoriginal.

Enter Shikari are 'original' but since when did that make someone good?

I'll tell you what. Go listen to some Ephel Duath. They're a band who combine originality with ACTUAL songwriting ability, to create a really great sound.

:-)

Can this end here?

Enter Shikari are clearly a 'love them or hate them' kind of band. Personally I think that's a lot better than just being yet another run-of-the-mill band nobody reacts to at all.

Personally I'm on the 'love them' side, mainly for their live shows which are some of the best I've ever been to. Music is supposed to be about enjoyment and entertainment and it's good to see a band that realise that.

Name: Not given | Date: 02/07/07 | Reply
How come nobody on this page can use "they're", "there" and "their" in the right context?

Name: James B | Date: 02/07/07 | Reply
Because the average age of an Enter Shikari fan is 11.

Name: Your mom | Date: 09/07/07 | Reply
While I agree that without the synth the songs would be incredibly average the agreeing stops there....

Theyre a fuckin fun band and if you dont like the trance beats mixed with hardcore sound then fuck off no need to bash them and their entire fanbase for it. They don't go around bashing real, good metal/hardcore. And lookie here, I used the word "their" in proper context, I'm not 11 years old.

Name: Mike | Date: 09/07/07 | Reply
Just because Enter Shikari takes a risk and tries something new for once doesn't mean that they suck. They're original and all of you know it. Unlike all the hundreds of other metal bands they know what it means to have a good time and enjoy music. More bands should learn to try new things and not stick to the same fucking style all the time.

I'm also not an 11 year old you have no idea what you're talking about. I used to hate trance but Enter Shikari opened my eyes and now I'm not jsut a boring Metalhead like all of you who hates on them.

Name: Dan | Date: 09/07/07 | Reply
to be fair, i could use 'they're' 'their' and 'there' properly when i was 11.

trance? original? and i'm sorry, but using a crowbar to jam two genres together does not make you original.

@ mike: 'hating on'? we're not 'hating on' anyone, whatever that means. we just think they're crap at what they do and we've heard it all before.

Name: paul | Date: 19/07/07 | Reply
"Why the hell hasn't anyone tried putting trance, techno and hardcore together before?"

for you to review this genre of music with the air of superiority and disdain you should at least know that ES are not the first band to think of this. some songs are better than others, but Enter Shikari are far better than you appear to be giving them credit for because its all too easy for some old bastard like you to write it off as stupid kids - they're the ones laughing with an illustorous future ahead of them and your writing second-rate reviews for a second-rate website.

and your surname is bunce. nuff said.

enter shikari are the single worst joke to be played on music in a long long time!! this song is awful.. all their songs are awful, having been aware of them since seeing them in a contest they played in st albans 4 or so years ago. ive thought they were shit since before most of their fanbase was even born! and hopefully for longer than most of them will live!! i only stumbled across this site when i typed "someone talking sense about over hyped under talented fuck stains enter shikari" and now i will look with glee every day for the rest of my life =)

I fail to see what makes this - narrow minded - James Bunce's opinion any more valid than anyone elses. "Personally, I'm all for experimentation within the metal genre" - No one cares. Enter Shikari may well be one of the most "special" bands around today for the very reason you touched upon "extremely loyal fan base", these guys do not sell out by changing their musical style to fit what "sounds right", they also dont sign with the first major label that offers to turn them into the new fall out boy, this shows their character and determination to remain individual with their style of music, which, despite your bias reviews, obviously appeals to a wide population as, (as im sure your aware) ES topped numerous karrang awards recently, therefore i think in truth before the "kids grow tired" they will benifite greatly from ES descion to not sign with theswe major labels and stay true to their music, and there fans.

Name: James | Date: 13/11/07 | Reply
I have a solution!
Those that don't like Enter Shikari don't listen to em and leave those that do like them alone!!!!

Why are peole being so small minded? Enter Shikari didn't set out to follow a set pattern of how a genre of music is supposed to be, they mashed together a range of different styles to create a new sound which is awesome in my opinon.
I think that if they sounded the same as every other post hardcore band i wouldnt like them as much. the rave style synths give their gigs the party atmosphere and really gets the crowd going while their hardcore giutar riffs get the crowd moshing and jumping.

in other words they are an awesome band that have created a strong fan base, huge international following, started up their own record label and made themselves rich all on their own and i think regardless of what music they play they deserve respect.

Its pretty funny how your all sat on here arguing. I found this site by mistake but its kept me entertained reading this aha!

Ive been a fan of enter shikari since before they had trance in there music and its pretty good stuff. But the trance addition has worked so well. It makes the music more fun and exciting. The only problem i have with them is the little teeny bopper kids that like the band because its "cool" too or because other people do. its lame!

But you should never put this band down until uve been to see them, i recon it would change your mind or if not u will atleast apriciate them! the atmoshphere in indescribable and surely thats what you want from a band! They are fun!

But geeez people if u like em great, see u at there next gig =]
If not pipe the fuk down and go get yr black clothes on and bang yr heads somewhere else cus we dnt have a problem with your music, infact i love some metal!

Every song is Brilliant!

Theyre an AMAZING band to see live!
Theyrs one of those bands that sound better live than on the cd in my opinion..

everyone complains that hardcore sounds the same so when a band trys something different, what do people do? Complain.. whats the point?

for god sake.. if you dont like a band why do you have to write crap about them?

just cuz you dont like them doesnt mean everyone else does...

You can have your own opinion...
but they certainally arent dull...

go see them live.. then you'll see how good they are.
