Immune don’t make music to be heard, they don’t make background music or songs to dance along to. They make music that needs to be listened to, over and over again. Each time you listen you hear something else, a new influence, a new sound. Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the best kept secret in the UK.

The influences are obvious; Tool, Radiohead, Massive Attack and Explosions in the Sky are all audible within the work, but to dismiss Immune as a tribute act is to take away from the album itself. It’s not so much a collection of songs and influences; it’s more of 57-minute journey to the other side of the universe and back again. From the opening note of ‘Ask’ to the atmospheric noises of album closer ‘Questions’, Immune take us on a marathon train ride through the world of experimental rock, stopping only to twist back in the opposite direction, leaving the listener wondering just what else can be achieved. I heard ‘Monkey’ and ‘Selling Screen’ a few months back and, as fantastic as they were, they portrayed Immune as nothing more than a Tool tribute act -- which in its own right wouldn't be a bad thing. But it was never feasible to me that the final album could sound like this. It didn't seem like they could make an album this damn good. But, thank the lord, they have.

This is an absolutely breathtaking piece of work, it draws you in, straps you down and keeps you there for 60 minutes, you could just stop the record and end the ride, but you don't want to, you feel compelled to listen on, such is the enticing nature of the album.

'Forever' sounds like something from Kid A era Radiohead; dark and menacing and with complex time structures leading into a massive crescendo of noise, a huge wall of noise. But it doesn't finish there; it drops down again and slowly but surely fades out, leaving you waiting for the next big crash of guitars. That never comes. 'Selling Screen' fidgets around uncomfortably -- it's looking for somewhere to go but can't quite make its mind up. The guitars will loom menacingly in one direction, while the electronics pull it towards a totally different sound and the vocals are like the glue between the two. 'Monatomy' is a piano-led ballad of sorts (except it's probably not about love) sounding, again, like something Thom Yorke would produce, with impressive vocals and great musicianship.

Immune then, after recent tours with Oceansize and Pelican, are going up in the world, and with a sound this distinctive and huge they deserve all the success they can get. And after my 15th listen to 1/f I 'm still quite amazed how an album of this stature could be created by four ordinary blokes from Leeds. It sounds like it should have been created by Demons and Wizards. And that’s a good thing.
