Mention Aereogramme to yours truly and you can expect a reaction somewhere in between a kiss on the cheek and a naked streak across a motorway, such is my love for the band. So when I read the press release to see that this EP was produced and engineered by Iain and Campbell from Aereogramme, I was especially eager to hear how it sounded.

Julia Thirteen, though, have no metal properties whatsoever; instead they offer us intense and atmospheric post-rock - experimental, thoughtful, expressive and emotionally beautiful. ‘Hands on Heart’ harks back to 90s indie and Mansun in particular (minus the helium fuelled vocals), and the string arrangement is flawlessly beautiful. At the other end of the spectrum, so to speak, ‘To the Ends of the Earth’ has an 80s feel to it. With fast, almost techno, keyboards and throbbing bass leading the track into its equally impressive chorus. Julia Thirteen clearly like to throw all their influences into their music.

Julia Thirteen also like to mess around with concepts. Their soon to be released debut album finds its conceptual roots in both world wars, "more specifically in the personal relationships that such global events created and destroyed". This makes for some truly interesting lyrics like in ‘This Is How We Part’. The only thing I have to knock Julia Thirteen back with is that the first two tracks do sound almost identical. But when they’re as good as they are this doesn’t really matter.

To say that Julia Thirteen are an exciting band with big potential is somewhat of an understatement. If Julia Thirteen keep producing music as good as this, they will soon find themselves in the hearts of every post-rock fan up and down the UK.
