It’s been a good few years since I heard a voice like this. Nestling nicely between Josh Homme’s roar and Robert Plant’s bark with an added dose of malevolence for good measure, Ethan Jones’ vocals are something of an aural delight.

His band Ladyfinger (NE) (It stands for Nebraska - apparently) are a pounding, feral, balls to the wall assault of anger, politics and drugs. Opener ‘Smuggler’ sets the mood that the rest of the album follows; unrelenting, it rhythmically struts around for the opening 30 seconds until it bursts open revealing a rowdy and, quite frankly, huge heart. It isn’t quite metal, it’s not punk, or even stoner, I don’t know what it is, but it’s certainly heavy – just not in usual sense of the word. ‘Sea Legs’ is an assault on your ears; grinding and pounding and screaming and even crooning through three minutes of pure rock.

‘...Man, Woman...’ is seasoned with a pinch of Mötorhead and, some might say, even Mastodon. It may not be surprising to hear that Heavy Hands was produced by Matt Bayles, whose previous work includes ISIS and Mastodon, and he’s unquestionably done a great job here too — the production is huge.

If you’re looking for an album bursting with ideas and diversity then you’ll be disappointed, but if you want straight-up, balls to the wall, unassuming rock then Heavy Hands should be added to your collection immediately. Ladyfinger (NE) are a breath of fresh air to these pretentious ears. They deserve to be heard.

How does the pretentiousness of your ears manifest itself?

I've no idea, but apparently they breathe...

I had a build-up of pretentiousness in my left ear but some drops shifted it.
