"A cliché in music is a phrase, riff, or song structure that has been used and re-used until its appearance in a composition becomes predictable." And on that note I could end this review. But I won't...

Hailing from Neunkirchen, Germany you would be forgiven for expecting industrial riffs, chanted vocals and leather (as is the stereotype for German acts), but Parachutes are a band that fit neatly alongside Silverstein and Spitalfield. Yes Parachutes are screamo. Glancing over the back of the CD before playing, it was difficult to tell whether they were an ironic band or not. It's getting harder and harder to spot irony these days and with song titles like ‘Dear Angel, Thank You For This Apocalypse’ and ‘I Carve Your Name Into My Arms’ I wasn't entirely sure they were being all serious. But after listening to the album, I can assure you they were.

First track ‘Seven Feet From Where You Call It Safe’, starts with a fairly promising punk-fuelled guitar riff and fast paced screamed vocals - and even though it’s nothing different, I found myself enjoying it. Then the music started to slow down slightly and I remember saying “Please don’t sing, please don’t sing”, and unfortunately he sang. With music like this you need huge choruses and an exceptional voice to actually get anywhere, otherwise it just dissolves into the background and becomes instantly forgettable. Here, the guitars and vocals are stale and overused and the lyrics are hilariously bad.

With the Post-Hardcore/Screamo scene being led by Atreyu/Aiden et al, I can’t really see Parachutes becoming the ‘next obsession’ with such non-descript music.
