| This double CD/DVD release is a live intimate acoustic show recorded at Philadelphia’s Grape Street in February 2006. It features hits from gold selling albums Disclaimer and Karma & Effect. |

Thinking of all the great acoustic albums past - especially ‘Nirvana Unplugged’ - it’s hard to see exactly what purpose this release serves, except as another money-spinning release for the die-hards to snap up. The fundamental problem with ‘One Cold Night’ is that it couldn’t be more middle-of-the-road if it tried. It’s all well and good being a multi-selling, huge in America, Nu-Grunge band, but this won't necessarily translate well in a live acoustic arena, especially when half of your songs are acoustic anyway. Shaun Morgan’s vocals, whilst falling somewhere in between Eddie Vedder and Scott Weiland on Seether’s normal releases, here sound like he’s trying his hardest to be the new Kurt Cobain, with his pained, agonising and heartfelt growling. Sadly it actually just sounds like Chad Kroeger. I have totally no problems with the musicianship though, and the production is fantastic - you can’t even tell it’s a live recording. It’s just when everything rests on the songwriting capabilities of Shaun Morgan that everything falls flat.
One Cold Night is a pointless release for anyone except the die-hard fans... Oh, the DVD. Was I meant to watch this? Right, well, it’s just the concert in full and then a behind-the-scenes documentary which I suppose makes the release a little bit worthwhile, although not much.
Do yourselves a favour and avoid this. |
