In the wake of Bring Me the Horizon’s relative recent success, the UK metal scene has exploded out of the underground with hundreds of identikit bands being found in pubs up and down the country. Shadows Amongst Silhouettes are one of these bands, and they have a lot of work to do if they want to break away from the crowd.
Musically, Shadows Amongst Silhouettes are talented enough; ‘Red Asphalt and the Journey Home’ wouldn’t sound out of place on a Funeral for a Friend record. The vocalists (Matt Parry and Reece Gocan) aren’t too bad either; Parry provides the high pitched yelping (and guttural growling) and Gocan the singing (sounding suspiciously American for a band from Staffordshire – but I won’t hold that against them. After all, Robbie Williams has sold millions of records).
Shadows Amongst Silhouettes' problem is we’ve heard all this before, numerous times in fact, and no matter how well it’s done it’s going to be hard to find a way to get excited about them. I’m not saying the band should give up, there’s a lot of promise there, and they’re all so young, it's just that right now I really can’t see a gap in the market for them. But stranger things have happened…
