Wow. These guys sure know how to write a riff.

The Fucking Champs (clearly not bothered about breaking into the mainstream charts) specialise in guitar acrobatics, combining ferocious rhythmic riffs (with much more than a nod to AC/DC, Black Sabbath et al) with intricate harmonies and ever-constant time shifting. The interplay in opener ‘The Loge’ makes for an instantly compelling start, and you’re left wondering when this hard-hitting riff-a-thon will stop. Thank Lemmy it doesn’t!

It would have been easy for The Fucking Champs to mellow down the intensity a tad and maybe get a vocalist onboard, but they’d just end sounding like a modern day Kyuss. This probably wouldn’t be a bad thing, except I still haven’t heard anyone do Kyuss as good as Kyuss themselves. Instead The Fucking Champs actually turn up the ferocity and it all makes for an album of incredible power.

Four of the tracks on VI - ‘Abide With Me’, ‘Insomnia’, ‘The Crystal Behind You’ and ‘Champs Fanfare’ - showcase a different side to The Fucking Champs. ‘Abide With Me’ and ‘Champs Fanfare’ are nothing more than three talented guitarists all playing along to the same intricate lick, thus the songs sound more like, well, a fanfare. ‘Insomnia’ is a sedate, almost orchestral interlude of sorts and ‘The Crystal Behind You’ also has the feel of an interlude - some nice guitar play (how bizarre) but with electronic drums instead. These tracks show The Fucking Champs do have the ability to try other ideas, but when the one idea they have is so damn good, they don’t really need to change.

Forget it. No matter how much I try, I can’t seem to do this album enough justice. I’ll tell you what, go out and buy it. If this rock ‘n’ roll fuelled rifftastic monster of an album doesn’t impress you, you have the freedom to call me any name under the sun.

The Fucking Champs are fucking good.
