| Pop-punkers Yellowcard can be distinguished by the fact they have a violinist in their ranks. Unfortunately they still peddle the same old pop-emo-punk that is being done to death right now. |

Two years since the US platinum-selling album Ocean Avenue, it’s hard to see how Yellowcard have progressed. No less punky, and no more mature, you would be forgiven for thinking this record was a re-release.
After introductory instrumental ‘Three Flights Up’, opening track proper, 'Lights and Sounds', does at least get the head nodding and the foot tapping – until the vocals start, anyway. The intense opening riff, probably the album's highlight, is unfortunately followed by the same old slighty pained singing and nonsensical lyrics, and inevitably leads into a huge sing-a-long chorus. Next up, 'Down On My Head' is incredibly dull, though at least 'Sure Thing Falling' sees the band rock a little more than they used to.
But the album's low point is 'Two Weeks From Twenty'. Ok, war is bad. But please, for our sakes, don't write a fucking song about it. The music is bad enough, but the lyrics are like nothing I’ve ever heard. They make Billie Joe Armstrong sound like Tony Benn. "You hear 'em say, that miles away, we lost another one that we sent with a gun." Terrible rhyming aside, what actually are they trying to tell us? ‘Keep an eye on your soldiers in case they go missing’? ‘Don't send them with guns, send them with knives’? But my favourite line is "And there's still no shame, from the man to blame." George Bush must be shaking in his boots.
This is a bad album from a bad pop-punk band, but it will keep the emo kids happy for a few minutes - until the next lot come along and Lights and Sounds gets consigned to bargain bins the world over. Not a bad thing, if you ask me. |
