I don’t know what it is about metal that brings out the harshest critic in me. The poorer examples of other genres will merely inspire apathy, a laissez-faire attitude that means I can overlook such things without much perturbation. But bad metal grates on me more than Jeremy Clarkson discussing social politics with Jamie Oliver.

It may be something about the vitriolic nature of metal as a genre that coaxes this response from my usually mild-mannered self but, psychological reasoning aside, don’t cross me when I’ve just listened to 7 Times Suicide.

The Italian band aren’t completely without merit, in fact some elements of songs on six-track EP The Butterfly Factory are pretty solidly written. Strong vocal harmonies dominate the majority of tracks and the EP isn’t devoid of some other good ideas in the form of some excellent heavy riffing and nice structural moments.

But sadly these moments are less than common over The Butterfly Factory. Part Korn circa 1997, part From Autumn To Ashes, part Rammstein at their quietest, 7 Times Suicide are largely shapeless and uninspired. The resulting product is directionless and unstructured - more of a group of ideas than a coherent collection of songs.

So without being completely hopeless, 7 Times Suicide have stirred up my wrath by failing to raise their standards above mediocrity. High standards, you may comment, but when we’re fortunate to have so many better bands out there, producing amazing heavy music, there’s no need to settle for anything but the best.
