It’s always comforting to know when you’re feeling particularly disheartened by life’s little challenges, that someone is in a bleaker position than you. And this is the snug emotional cranny where Absentee’s musical subject matter fits perfectly.

Dan Michaelson seems to be a man well-acquainted with life’s darker characteristics. But rather than breaking out in Fall Out Boy-esque histrionics, he dryly deadpans his way through this track, describing an ugly affair and confrontation of fact that it could bring into the world even uglier offspring.
Although not having a memorable climax or particular direction, this track is nevertheless strangely satisfying. And the kids’ choir is a nice touch - this and the contrastingly upbeat guitar solo inject a glimmer of brightness into Michaelson’s world-weary drawl, preventing ‘We Should Never Have Children’ from becoming too overbearing.
So, if you’ve missed the bus to work or the cat decided to use your pillow as a litter tray, Absentee provide the a gratifying soundtrack to either wallow in your ill fate or to spark the realisation that there are people around who have experienced life’s crueller jokes. |
