| With a title like 'Chloroform', Belasco are asking for trouble. Enter stage right a chorus of mean-spirited critics: “It’s more than coincidence that Chloroform sends you to sleep…because so does this single!”. Ha fucking ha. |

The truth is though, this single does little to detract such unconstructive criticism. It’s a case of been there (in 1997) and heard it (from the likes of Placebo, Three Colours Red and a cast of a thousand others) and the track floats past doing nothing to warrant attention or praise.
Singer Tim Brownlow’s vocals do little but lie in a stagnant no man’s land between Brian Molko and Thom Yorke, without ever managing to match either’s individual style. In fact he sounds as if, throughout the song, someone is slowly throttling him, applying more and more pressure as the song progresses.
Musically there’s nothing new or even interesting being produced either. In fact, as I press start on the CD for a third time (not out of choice), I’m reminded somewhat of The Bravery’s 'Honest Mistake', something which I never hoped would happen to me in this lifetime…
In fact, so uninspired is the band’s output that they even put an instrumental version of the song on the b-side. Who’s done that in the last eight years?
The truth of the matter is 'Chloroform' wouldn't have been a good example of a rock song even during the era Belasco are so clearly stuck in. I’m off to get my copy of Pure out and listen to how this music was meant to sound. |
