| With the break-up of McLusky and Million Dead, Reuben's ability to always leave me slightly disappointed and a quiet spell from Jetplane Landing, I was beginning to fear for the apparently-dwindling health of British rock music. |

However, 'Roadkill', Engerica's latest single, certainly gives the impression that this band hold the formula for the perfect remedy to this malaise.
Driving, hook-laden and spiky from the outset, 'Roadkill' demands attention with a no-frills punk rock attitude. Dave Gardner's sneering verses avoid arrogance but display an appealing confidence, the chorus is powerful yet melodic and, dare I say, reminds me of a heavier version of "A" back in their early-career heyday - 'Roadkill' barely breaches the two minute mark but leaves a lasting impression with its pure energy and guts.
And as if to prove this is no fluke, Engerica serve up the equally powerful b-side, 'Detective Show'. It conjures up memories of McLusky, Nirvana and Therapy?, as the frenzied vocals are yelped and twitched over Michael Webster's scuzzy bassline and the track hurtles past in a series of punctuated guitar blasts.
There's no new ground being explored here but it's achieved to a high standard. Engerica can be the injection of adrenaline into the heart of the British rock scene, keep an eye out for them heading the polls in 2006. |
