If I’m honest, I don’t know much about New Zealand. I know they have lots of sheep. I know Lord of the Rings was filmed there. And I know that there was a kid at school from there who wore silver tracksuit bottoms every day.

Now I know something else, namely that New Zealand natives Goldenhorse are huge over there, already with a triple platinum album to their name.

It’s clear that the light, poppy sound of ‘Run Run Run’ would attract a lot of radio airplay. Kirsten Morell’s impressive vocal range is showcased over disco drums and a twinkly guitar line, making for a pleasant mix that would struggle to be seen as offensive by anyone.

But the polished outcome is the band’s poison as well as its main strength. It sounds far too clean - too much a cynical attempt to launch an assault on chart territory from a band with the great weight of expectation from a large fanbase.

Like when Morell incessantly repeats “Come back I can’t live without you...” as the track draws to a close, it all has an air of desperation about it, and that’s never particularly appealing.

Great to see something by Goldenhorse at last officially released in the UK. I first got to know of the band when over in NZ in 2005. This is a great track but just wait until you hear 'Out Of The Moon'. That's the song that'll get the band the recognition their talent so thoroughly deserves.

James should replace the words "New Zealand" in his first sentence with "anything". Or at least "music". I'm struggling to imagine what he thinks bands should do if they become popular in their own country - obviously not try and break any other territory. Thankfully I guess most people in the world would disagree with him on this point and all his other ones. Imagine if no artist ever released anything outside their native territory?

Nice to know though there is someone who is still an authority on what is appealing or not. Where is James' No 1 album then?

What a waste of some good sarcasm. As I read it, James wasn't saying that Goldenhorse shouldn't attempt to break outside of NZ -- the 'territory' he was speaking of was chart territory. As in, they've adopted a mainstream sound in order to sell records.

Watch out, James. Most people in the world disagree with you about everything. That's a hell of a burden for a young man with so much to give.

Incidentally, James' number one album last year was by someone called Germlin, I seem to recall. Never heard of them myself, but I'm almost certain they will be appealing.
