Mice Parade – the creation of New Yorker Adam Pierce – have created in this eponymous album an ethereal and dreamlike sound which, despite various collaborators and meandering amongst genres, conjures up a misty and wistful musical landscape for the listener to get lost in.

Pierce’s unfearing attitude to experimentation and eclectic gathering of sources is evident throughout this offering. A base of folk mixes with electronica and indie rock amongst others, but the opportunity for a catchy hook or memorable harmony is never eschewed. The album is a ticket to a world tour of musical influences, from the Latin yet somehow Scandinavian-tinged ‘Dolphins on a Dime’ to ‘Satchelaise’ which, in the introduction, gives the impression that Pierce has upped sticks to record in a remote swamp somewhere in America’s deep south.

Highlights come thick and fast, fighting for attention like passing daydreams or flights of fancy but when Kristin Anna Valtysdottir (múm) and Leatitia Sadier (Stereolab) add their vocal talents the result is instantly memorable and brilliant in composition.

Sometimes the relaxed attitude can be slightly overbearing and become almost soporific but this is as much praise as it is a criticism – after all, any dedicated listener of music knows that it’s often the stuff that requires most attention that is ultimately the most rewarding. This is certainly the case with Mice Parade.

With an already-proven back catalogue, any new Mice Parade release is a cert to be value for money for any lover of lo-fi indie rock. But what’s surprising and frankly amazing is the ingenuity and creativity that marks each record out from the next and which, on this evidence, shows no sign of abating.

You can make Jab, Cum Seen out of your name. What's wrong with that?
