I was informed by the nice lady on the local news the other day that, here in Yorkshire, we are blessed with “the most vibrant music scene in the UK" and I had little reason to protest against these claims. However, when such a fertile "music scene" produces bands such as Milburn, I’m left wondering whether or not we’re actually in a good position.

Discussions on the advantages of Yorkshire’s musical output aside, I was worried from the point at which I discovered that this band are touted as the "New Artic Monkeys".

Part of me wanted my indie-snobbery to be proven wrong and this to be a gem in the waiting. Another part wanted my initial, unfounded generalisation to be correct - indicating I was able to suss out the cynicism of the music industry. With equal measures of self-loathing and smug satisfaction these two minutes 45 seconds of evidence supported my inner cynic, rendering the latter claim correct.

However, despite this being Artic Monkeys: Redux, what remains is still a largely vacuous, unfulfilling track. It suffers from a plague that has affected the majority of charting indie-pop since the golden days of Britpop, that there is no substance provided to grasp to, nothing for the listeners to invest themselves in.

‘Send In The Boys’ is based round a single guitar hook that are ten-a-penny these days, followed by a jangly, three-chord chorus, repeat, bridge, end. There is no invention, little evidence of innovation and it is completely lacking in any charisma.

It’s so evident that Milburn invested so little of themselves in this single that I’m unwilling to do anything more than match that. I’m positive that this track will do just fine in the charts, but exactly how much of a musical accolade is that these days?

Does anyone remember Bennett? I think this is them in disguise. They were rubbish to exactly the same decimal point.

Arctic Monkeys surely?

Agreed: 'Arctic'

NO. You're wrong. They only get compared to AM because of a) the accent and Sheffield connections and b) people have got short memories and small brains. Milburn are lucky to be getting compared to Artic Monkeys really - it's giving them more positive exposure than their mediocre mid-90s Britpop actually deserves.
