| Swedish native Robyn (yep, just Robyn, she’s too cool for a surname) decides to confuse the fact of her Scandinavian heritage with her latest release, ‘Konichiwa Bitches’. |
| |
A neat slice of catchy electro-pop, ‘Konichiwa Bitches’ is full of clever rhymes and amusing imagery but never really matches the heights reached by the music it is so obviously emulating.
Far superior examples of this type of pop music have been produced by Missy Elliot and Gwen Stefani in recent times, and it’s next to impossible not to notice the similarities and, unfortunately, the deficiencies in Robyn’s effort.
But it would be unfair to solely mark the track against other artists. It’s true that, standing on its own, ‘Konichiwa Bitches’ is an accomplished pop song which towers above 99 per cent of current chart output. The minimalist synth backing is expertly handled and any one of the remixes would be a certain floor-filler in most clubs.
In producing a song that places her in such eminent company, Robyn is obviously a talent when it comes to writing this brand of hip-hop infused electro. It’s worth noting, though, that when you sound a lot like other musicians, comparison is unavoidable and rarely flattering. |
