| Starky’s debut UK single ‘Is This How It Ends?’ comes from Australia on a wave of Antipodean award nominations, big name support slots and critical acclaim. But at TinyVoices we’re not interested in all that. Oh no, we want to know what it’s really like. |

As a debut single, ‘Is This How It Ends?’ is a confident offering, chronicling the moment when the girl calls you to tell you it’s over, something I think we can all relate to. On that note, before I begin wallowing in my pit of self-pity, on with the review.
The track has an anthemic quality and a jangly catchiness that makes me realise that this is the way The Libertines were intended to sound before drugs and differences made their indelible mark. It’s a nice reminder that someone is still writing songs that wouldn’t sound out of place being performed at Wembley long after bands like Feeder and Headswim gave up on the idea.
Beau Cassidy’s (one of many cracking names of band members I’ve got in my 'to review' pile) vocals place themselves just on the correct side of the melodramatic line that Fall Out Boy sprinted past years ago, and this only adds to that stadium rock feeling the whole track exudes.
From what I can tell, the split A-side ‘Hey Bang Bang’ also deals with a schism in a relationship, which also tells me that someone’s got issues that need resolving. With the addition of strings it's more of a sedate affair but equally as epic in its sound and scope.
Starky plan to release an album and tour in the New Year. For those of you who like their rock polished, grand and sweeping, the arrival of this band on these shores is a very good thing indeed. |
