'Ali In The Jungle' sounds like a concept by desperate ITV bosses for an all-new reality TV show - think Mohammed Ali being set loose in the Amazon, seeing how many different species of animals he could render extinct in two weeks. In fact it’s the new single by The Hours.

Seemingly, in vocal style, lyrical content and sound, The Hours are attempting to fill the void in the pop world vacated by The Smiths, left uninhabited for so long.

But despite a catchy piano hook, an intensely melodic chorus and furious naming of historical characters who were "against the odds", 'Ali In The Jungle' ends up sounding inferior even to Morrissey’s current efforts and is ultimately unfulfilling.

B-side 'Nothing' is a more laid back, piano-driven affair but still lacks any real punch or interest and floats by like a passing thought or short-lived whimsy.

Strangely, the track on this single that caught my attention the most was the simplest, at least in terms of structure. A wholly instrumental piece, 'The Greatest Comeback' sounds like the score to a sad European film and its sweeping violin melodies certainly wouldn’t sound out of place being used in a Jeunet film.

It’s difficult to envisage The Hours’ overall musical manifesto. All the tracks on this single are vastly different in terms of tone, structure and sound. It seems that if they focussed their collective attention upon one goal, the output would be of a far greater standard than across this trio of songs.

In the meantime I’m going to think up some more boxing-related reality TV shows that will set Saturday night television alight. Frank Bruno in Ghost Puncher? Perfect.
