The Twilight Sad
- 'That Summer At Home I Had Become The Invisible Boy'
(Fat Cat)

| Glasgow’s The Twilight Sad release ‘That Summer, At Home I Had Become The Invisible Boy’ (which I’m going to have to abbreviate from now on to save my fingertips) hot on the heels of a visit to Texas for SXSW. |

It seems to be symptomatic of an appearance at this festival that the words ‘Next’, ‘Big’ and ‘Thing’ will get bandied around. The natural question arises: could this collection of words be justifiably added to review for The Twilight Sad?
‘That Summer…’ is an initially slow-burning track that simmers and skulks before exploding into a beautiful beast laden with emotion and carefully-constructed melodies. After the incendiaries all that remains is noise - still, however, just as meticulously manufactured in its subtlety.
In a lot of ways, it’s reminiscent of the band’s compatriots, Seafood or Arab Strap, but much more raw and anthemic. And this delicate mixture between euphoria and gut-wrenching desperation is a rare achievement that The Twilight Sad seem to have perfected. It really is unsurprising to learn that the music is inspired by the often-bleak yet beautiful surroundings that the band calls home - “the sticks just outside Glasgow”.
"The Next Big Thing" is such a cliché that it would be unfair to use it to label a band like The Twilight Sad. I’ll leave it as this - they’re definitely a band that warrant a place in front of the world’s media at South By Southwest. Music like this should be heard by as many people as possible. |
