Tiny Dancers
- 'Lions and Tigers and Lions EP'
(Parlophone)

| I’m considering writing to the Oxford English Dictionary to tell them that their current description of the word “eclecticism” isn’t correct. For West Yorkshire’s Tiny Dancers take the word and, over the course of Lions and Tigers and Lions, completely redefine its meaning. |

On this five-track EP, every song takes different genres and artists as a point of reference and pursues its individual tangent with gloriously idiosyncratic touches propelling it towards its unique goal.
My personal favourite, 'Hemsworth Hallway' is an upbeat, folky track with a climax that makes me realise that if the Beach Boys had made electro-pop, the world would have been a much more amazing place.
'Russian Snow' dresses the bitter and harsh Siberian climate in layers of jolly acoustic pop until you’d believe you were in the Bahamas were it not for the lyrical content. Seldom has such bleak subject matter been so beautifully contrasted with an upbeat melody.
To end on a high, glam rock-tinged (and in this instance, it sounds good) 'Going Away' takes what could have been a standard country rock plod and twists it into a fuzzy, keyboard-driven sing-along. It all culminates in a round of applause fully deserved by a band that quite clearly puts huge effort into being innovative, different and moreover entertaining throughout every last second of each song.
Tiny Dancers have created a toe-tapping, catchy collection of songs that bodes very well indeed for their forthcoming debut album, released in Spring 2007. I know first hand that winter in West Yorkshire can be the most unfriendly season, but with the warmth and comfort generated by Lions and Tigers and Lions, it’ll be a bit more bearable this time round. |
