The genre that is now branded “emo” unsettles me. Some of it’s bearable, some of it I actually like, but I see no appeal whatsoever in the vast majority of music that is shovelled in under this wide umbrella. Am I merely being discerning, sorting the musical wheat from the chaff or, worryingly, am I getting too old to appreciate the music produced by the youth of today? That’s why “emo” unsettles me.

Supposedly Florida’s (where else would they come from?) Yellowcard are different from their contemporaries in that they have a violinist in their ranks. Over the sub-three minutes of 'Lights and Sounds' I’m led to believe this is more of a gimmick than a serious musical tool. The strings are a token gesture, save for a three-second burst in the bridge, and the track is rendered little different from anything currently being produced by the caterwauling lump of melodrama that is Fall Out Boy.

I’m not entirely sure what’s left to be said about either Yellowcard or 'Lights and Sounds'. Something that’s such a product of style over substance and so devoid of any real emotional input (now that’s Irony for you, Alanis) fills me so full of apathy that I can’t even bring myself to have any cheap digs at scene kids’ fringes or £75 pairs of jeans.

So perhaps I am getting old. Perhaps this is music for the kids and I can’t relate to it. But for all I can see, there isn't anything to actually relate to, no substance or grounding in the music. 'Lights and Sounds' merely compounds this theory - a perfect case study for older generations who insist “music was better when I was young”. In the face of this evidence, they’d probably be right.
