We started off this lovely evening being bribed by the support act, though he clearly hadn’t done his research. I don’t like olives, or pizzas contaminated with them, Mr Bannard.

The slackness of the Rescue Room’s kitchen staff had clearly added to Ed’s nerves by this point, him and his mates having waited over an hour for their food, and due on stage in a few minutes. It didn’t really show in his performance though. His voice is nice enough, his songs are nice enough and he seems like a thoroughly nice chap – but he would be better off on his own. The guitarist and drummer who joined him halfway through the set ruined the chilled out vibe somewhat, perhaps confusing the "Emo Hippies" (as my companion for the evening pronounced them to be) sitting down, cross legged, at the front.

While Ed was still autographing his Ł3 demo cds, Jose Gonzalez took to the stage in front of an audience silenced by a few authoritative punters going "shhhh". An odd intensity took hold as we all stood there watching a bloke tune his guitar, doing his best to ignore us. Then he started singing. He’s got an even nicer voice than Ed, though I’m not sure his songs are any more or less nice, and he certainly didn’t offer me any pizza. It probably means something that the only thing I can remember about his songs are the abrupt, seemingly identical, single chord endings. He did some nice covers at the end though - Kylie’s ‘Hand On Your Heart’ managed to sound like a decent, heartfelt song, and Massive Attack’s ‘Teardrop’ sounded pretty much exactly the same, which isn’t such a bad thing.

His intensity was rewarded by periodic whoops and hollers from the crowd, but I don’t really see how you can get worked up enough by this kind of music to do so. Nice as his voice is, Jose just needs some catchier songs to reach the dizzy heights of David Gray and that annoying bloke who’s at number one at the moment.
