A night of superb rock'n'wrong.

Kong are rad, whoever they are. A bunch of guys in transparent plastic masks that make them look like pervy burns victims, playing in similar shapes to Shellac and their ilk. The tubby bassist wears just his mask and his boxers, and has the set list scrawled on his chest, which is a fair visual indication of what they sound like.

As we wait for Future Of The Left to set up, a mad hush of anticipation hits the 100 Club. Here's why: bassist Kelson Matthias was once the rampaging frontman of Jarcrew, a noisy posse of art-rockers who never quite managed to translate the excitement of their live show to tape. The other two hail from Cardiff's revered but commercially unsuccessful Mclusky. Jack Egglestone's the unstoppable drummer who keeps playing even when the roadie's dissassembling his kit, and Andy Falkous is the journalist-eating fountain of spiteful wit at the centre of it all. He's keen to shrug off his legacy though. "People make too much of comparing us to the old band really," Falco tells TinyVoices before the gig. "But I do have the exact same voice as I had two years ago."

Yes he does: his trademark hysterical tirades against the idiotic and the mundane are still a big part of the songs. So are the catchy, pumping basslines that once propelled Mclusky, making the new single 'Fingers Become Thumbs' groove around like anvils on a bouncy castle. The closing 'A Dead Enemy Always Smells Good' is even heavier and even more bouyant. It would be good to hear more vocals from Kelson though, because the brief moments where he and Falco stop barking in unison and go for more layered vocals work brilliantly.

But by the end of the night, it's the newly wide grooves of FOTL that leave the audience reeling. They're a band with plenty to live up to, and on tonight's evidence they're just as good as we've hoped.

I read somewhere that one of the members of Kong is also in Oceansize.

Oh, ace. I was at this too. It was indeed terrific. When Kelson came into the crowd in the encore, he tried to take my cigarette but dropped it on the floor. Then he headbutted me. Indie points ahoy.

If they don't play Nottingham soon I'm going to kill people. It's that simple.

David, that was you? he was always a cheeky bugger. In Jarcrew he was always running off stage to swig peoples' drinks...

Ahh. I loved Jarcrew, saw them supporting Biffy one time and I bought the 'Paris..' single from the drummer at the Merch stall. He said he'd sign it for me, 'cause you know I was young, and that's what you do when you're young. He then went and got every single member of the band from backstage to come and sign this single for me. They were all really awesome guys!
