Belle and Sebastian
- 'Funny Little Frog'
(Rough Trade)
| It is reasonably well-established by now that rockular music fans can be neatly divided into those who go weak at the knees at the sound of Belle and Sebastian’s old-skool indie pop, and those who find the band unspeakably twee. |

This writer, happily, falls into the former category, so it was a reasonably safe bet that he would find this single to his tastes. ‘Funny Little Frog’ pretty much picks up where 2003’s Dear Catastrophe Waitress LP left off, very much in the mould of ‘I’m A Cuckoo’, etc.: poppy, highly polished and surprisingly catchy. It also contains the first good use of a piano in a pop record since the last Ben Folds album, and may sound a bit like ‘Beat Surrender’ by the Jam, or may sound nothing like that.
An interesting counterpoint to ‘…Frog’ can be found in B&S’s recent live recording of their classic, much folkier album If You’re Feeling Sinister, originally released a decade ago. These days, the band have sold out to such an extent that they actually lift singles off albums: ‘Funny Little Frog’ is the first from The Life Pursuit, due to warm the hearts of ageing indie kids everywhere in early Feb.
