POP FACT ALERT: Benjamin is the chap who provided the vocals on the ubiquitous hit single ‘Music Sounds Better With You’. This, his second solo album, sounds nothing like that, but I thought it might be useful for you to know in case it ever comes up in a pub quiz or something.

Rather, Out of Myself reminds one of New Order – but, tragically, the current, rather dreary version, rather than the terrific pop-rock geniuses behind ‘Blue Monday’ and ‘Regret’. The production is appropriately sparkling, but underneath it are 11 half-arsed songs which don’t appear to say anything or go anywhere, suggesting that Mr Diamond should have spent more time writing and less time fiddling with knobs. When it does perk up a bit, such as on ‘I Wish’, you find yourself eventually thinking "how long is this song, anyway?". Four and a half minutes, as it turns out, which tells you just about everything you need to know.

Yes, it’s utterly boring, but at least it’s boring in a different way to the legions of Coldplay and Travis imitators – which seems to be about the best any of us can hope for these days.
