Broken Family Band’s fourth album in as many years comprises eleven songs loosely linked by the theme of love: a conceit which is unlikely to win it any friends in these parts, as we are all emotionally dead.

But no matter. Although they’re from Cambridge, BFB’s influences are unashamedly United Statesian in nature: while they’re known mostly for their countryish leanings, there’s also an element of noticeably American indie rock in there. Hello Love showcases both strands: the country lament of ‘So Many Lovers’ competes for attention with the pounding ‘Love Your Man, Love Your Woman’, and the jaunty guitar pop of ‘Don’t Change Your Mind’ and opening track ‘Leaps’. ‘Seven Sisters’, which rounds off the album, starts off as a ballad before growing, over the course of eight minutes, into a rock-out crescendo.

The overall effect is (if we continue to ignore the common thread of the subject-matter) slightly inconsistent, but there’s nothing wrong with that in our book. Hello Love is an enjoyable, oddly satisfying record, which hopefully should win Broken Family Band some of the attention afforded to their US comrades currently ploughing a similar furrow.
