Biographical details concerning Clor are few and far between: all I can glean from the packaging and accompanying press bumf is that the band consists of five blokes from Kennington - itself something of a mystery. Evidently, Clor wish to remain an enigma: at least to those too lazy to plug their computer into the Wonderweb in the interests of research (funny, isn’t it, how the word "research" used to evoke immersing oneself into a dusty library to emerge, years later, bearded, slightly deranged, and clutching a weighty thesis; and now it just means typing "prince philip lizard rumour" into Google on your lunchbreak?).

Clor, the album, is something of a mixed bag. For the most part, it is best described (well, as best as I can manage, anyway, which isn’t saying much) as quirky, slightly awkward alt-synth-pop-rock, which had me thinking of Ooberman and, for some reason, erstwhile Peel faves Bearsuit. Often, this formula comes up trumps: such as with the disco-y opener ‘Good Stuff’, or new single ‘Outlines’, with its maddeningly catchy chorus of "Each/of/us/is special/in/our/own unique way" (that’s how he sings it, honest). ‘Love + Pain’, also already elegantly reviewed by Mr Salmon, also fits into this category.
Elsewhere, however, the effect is rather more grating, as is the case with ‘Stuck In A Tight Spot’ and ‘Making You All Mine’, which stagger about like druken lunatics, all freefall melodies, rock guitar and manic synths. Just to confuse things, there’s also precisely two quiet, downbeat tracks: the plaintive, guitar-led ‘Gifted’, and the cute closing track ‘Goodbye’.
I salute Clor’s admirable attempt to come up with something a bit unusual, and would recommend anyone give their album a listen: just keep the "skip" button within arm’s reach. |
