| Even if we take as given that music criticism is one of the least worthwhile pursuits it is possible for an individual to engage in, reviewing a single which is currently perched in the higher echelons of the hit parade (albeit isn't technically released for another two days) seems unusually pointless. |

Still, that's the situation we've found ourselves in, so we may as well try to make a decent go of it. ‘Ruby’ starts off sounding remarkably like ‘Jilted John’, before settling down into a more recognisably Kaiserish groove. The maddeningly catchy tune, endearingly rubbish lyrics (“Due to lack of interest, tomorrow is cancelled / Let the clocks be reset and the pendulums held”), chorus consisting of one phrase repeated endlessly (“Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby / Do you, do you, do you, do you”) and shiny Stephen Street production job are all present and correct.
That said, things seem to have moved on a little bit since ‘I Predict A Riot’ and ‘Oh My God’. There’s something pleasingly well-rounded about ‘Ruby’, more of a proper pop song and less of a half-arsed Blur pastiche. I like it.
And like all proper pop songs, there’s a bit immediately before the chorus where everything stops and then starts again. Hurrah! |

I liked this song when I first heard it. Irritates the shite out of me now.
